Washington State Board of Education May Meeting Highlights

Highlights from the May 2017 State Board of Education meeting are below. You can find packet materials through links in the text, or review all meeting and additional materials online. You can also watch videos of the meeting, by agenda section, online.

SBE voted on the following business items:

  • The Board approved the list of Private Schools for Operation in the 2017-2018 School Year
  • The Board approved the Option One Waiver Requests from Bethel School District, Cle Elum-Roslyn School District, Dieringer School District, Lynden School District, Methow Valley School District, Mount Baker School District, Napavine School District, and White River School District
  • The Board did not approve the Option One Waiver Request from Ellensburg School District
  • The Board approved the Option Two Waiver Request for Bickleton School District
  • The Board approved the Credit-Based Graduation Requirements Waiver for Career Academy at Truman and Federal Way Open Doors in Federal Way Public Schools
  • The Board approved the Career and Technical Education Course Equivalency Framework for Viticulture
  • The Board approved the Career and Technical Education Course Equivalency Framework for Agricultural Power and Technology
  • The Board approved the Waiver of Career and Technical Education Statewide Course Equivalency for Mount Baker School District
  • The Board adopted the Website Accessibility Corrective Action Plan

Presentations and discussions:

  • Equity Efforts – The Board discussed their feedback on the multicultural community forum on Tuesday evening
  • Student Transitions Panel Presentation – The Board heard two panels regarding supporting student transitions for post-secondary success. Several documents are located under “additional materials”
  • CTE Course Equivalency Frameworks – The Board heard from staff and OSPI staff regarding consideration for approval of two additional CTE course equivalencies (See above for action taken on these)
  • Accountability System Framework Changes Under Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESSA) – The Board heard from staff and OSPI staff regarding Achievement Index results for this year
  • BEA Waivers – The Board heard background on the twelve waiver requests under consideration
  • Overview of the Role of the State Board of Education– The Board heard background on the statutory duties of the SBE, the history of how these duties have come about and several case studies of how other states’ Board of Education functions
  • Student presentation – Student Board Members Baxter Hershman gave his final presentation and reflected on his time on the Board and what he had learned and what his future plans entail
  • Legislative Update – Staff presented on legislative progress taken on the Board’s adopted legislative priorities, discussion of the three legislative budget proposals and an update on the special legislative session
  • Charter School Update – The Board heard from staff regarding the technical changes to WAC 180-19 necessitated by E2SSB 6194 from 2016, RCW 28A.710
  • Soap Lake School District RAD Update –  OSPI staff and Soap Lake staff reported on the progress of Soap Lake District
  • Board Discussion – The Board discussed sending a letter of input to Superintendent Reykdal regarding ESSA
