Ballots for the Nov. 3 general election arrive in mailboxes this week. The Washington State PTA Board of Directors voted to oppose three measures on this year’s ballot, and local PTAs are deciding how to engage. What your PTA can do depends on the action it has taken. Because each measure is decided separately, your PTA may have adopted a position on one and stayed neutral on another.
If your PTA has not taken a position yet, the Steps for Local PTAs and Councils Guide on our 2026 ballot measures page walks through how.
If your PTA has adopted a position to oppose a measure
You can encourage your members to vote no on that measure. WSPTA’s 2026 ballot measures page has WSPTA’s positions, FAQs, and ready-to-use resources. You can also:
- Share WSPTA’s talking points and resources about the initiatives. Talking points for IL26-001 (school notification & student records) Talking points for IL26-638 (school sports eligibility) and Talking points for I-645 (repeal of the high-earner tax)
- Communicate your opposition through PTA channels only such as email, meetings, coffee chats, and non-district newsletters.
If your PTA has not adopted a position
Your PTA stays neutral on that measure. You can still:
- Share information with members about the ballot measures, informational only and nothing persuasive.
- Share information about registering to vote.
- Encourage people to vote in general.
- Keep sharing this information through Election Day.
One important limit
Whatever your PTA’s position, only factual information may go through school or district channels, such as district-sponsored websites, school newsletters, kid mail, or school events. Persuasive “vote no” messaging belongs on PTA channels only.
Help every voter you reach
These nonpartisan tools are for everyone to share:
- Register to vote or update your registration at VoteWA.gov. The deadline to register online or by mail is Oct. 26, and in-person registration stays open through Election Day.
