Jumpstart Next Year: Offer an Early Bird PTA Membership Option

By: Dianna Bailey, WSPTA Membership Director

As the school year winds down, it might seem like a natural time to hit pause, but it’s actually the perfect moment to set up your PTA for success in the year ahead. One great way to build early momentum is by offering an Early Bird Membership Option.

This allows families, staff, and community members to join your PTA for the upcoming school year before summer even begins, helping you start strong and plan ahead.

Important Note:

Early bird memberships are for the next PTA year and do not officially go into effect until July 1. It’s essential to clearly communicate this, so new members understand when their membership benefits begin.

Confirm this is enabled on your Givebacks site in advance of early bird membership sales. You also need to have a member approved budget line for Early Bird Memberships in advance of selling them.

Why Offer Early Bird Membership?

Build Early Momentum
Get a head start on your membership goals before the fall rush begins. You’ll enter the new year with a stronger base and more time to focus on planning programs and events.

Catch Families Before They Disperse
End-of-year activities bring families into the school—take advantage of the increased traffic to promote your PTA and invite early engagement.

Ease the Workload Later
By spreading out your membership efforts, you reduce the stress of launching everything at once in September.

Set the Tone for Next Year
Early bird signups send a message that your PTA is organized, welcoming, and excited for what’s ahead.

Tips for a Smooth Early Bird Campaign

  • Be Clear in All Communications
Use language like: “Join now for the 2026–2027 PTA year! Membership starts July 1.”
  • Offer a Small Incentive
Consider giving early bird members a thank-you gift, recognition on social media, or early access to spirit wear or event tickets.
  • Track Members Carefully
Make sure you can distinguish early bird members from current year members, so they’re properly entered into your membership system on or after July 1. This is especially important if you offer membership signups via paper form.
  • Use End-of-Year Events to Promote
Backpack flyers, QR code signs, and a friendly presence at concerts or field days can go a long way.

An Early Bird Membership campaign is a smart, simple way to set next year’s PTA up for success before the school year even begins.

Ready, set… grow!
