Region Director Message
As February begins I reflect on the two women Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst that founded the National Congress of Mothers 113 years ago on February 17, 1897. They were expecting maybe 50 women to come to that first meeting but had over 2,000 attend. It truly is a great organization that we all belong to now 150,000 plus members in Washington State alone. What a difference PTA has made for the children in the last 113 years!
I had the opportunity to attend Focus Day in Olympia on January 18, 2010 what a wonderful day as the Columbia Room and hallway outside was filled to standing room only of adults and children that came to have their voices heard that “Cuts hurt Kids”. It was a wonderful sight to see the capital steps full of blue scarves as we chanted, listened to speakers and applauded both adults and children as they shared stories from their districts on how cuts have affected them. Thanks to the 1000 people that showed up to help make a difference that day and for those that sent e-mails and called their legislators from home- you did make a difference! We can’t stop with just that day we need to continue to e-mail and call our legislators to get the message across “Cuts hurt Kids”.
If you haven’t attended PTA and the Law this year Region 9 has one more opportunity for you to attend it will be held on Wednesday, February 24th in Maple Valley. Registration will be from 5:30-6:00 p.m. and the class will be from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Location will be announced soon! Keep a look out for more information including registration form on the Region 9 website and in your inbox. Scott Allen, WSPTA President and Novella Fraser, WSPTA PTA Secretary and past Region 9 Director will be the presenters. This proves to be a fun evening indeed.
I hope to see many of you at the Region 9 Spring Conference on Thursday, March 11th at Meeker Middle School in Renton. The registration form is included in this newsletter. We have several classes that will be taught with a couple of presentations that you won’t want to miss!
Washington State PTA Convention is right around the corner on April 30th- May 2nd, 2010 at the Double Tree in Sea-Tac.
Consider sending as many people as you can to have a voice, receive training
and network with PTA members all over the state. More information will be
mailed to PTA Presidents by the end of February. As always please contact me
or a member of the Service Delivery Team if you have a question or just want
to bounce an idea off on us. For those within councils your council is also
a great place to go to get answers and ideas. Hoping the next few months are
good ones in your local units and councils!
Smile,
Allyson Johnson
