WSPTA Legislative Assembly Venue Location Statement
WSPTA has recently become aware of the legal action involving Seattle Pacific University (SPU). We want to assure our members of WSPTA’s respect and value for our LGBTQ+ community across the state.
WSPTA is a grassroots advocacy organization that relies on our members to guide our statewide advocacy efforts. Without Legislative Assembly, members will not have a chance to weigh in on the platform and it will be adopted by the board. Legislative Assembly is the opportunity to hear member voice to amend, debate and vote on the WSPTA legislative agenda, issues and resolutions. WSPTA wants the legislative platform to reflect member priorities to better advocate on these critical issues during the upcoming legislative session.
WSPTA has reviewed the venue contract with SPU. There are no stipulations from SPU restricting WSPTA speech in any way.
We cannot change the order and format of this year’s Legislative Assembly. WSPTA has already provided legal notice to members. Registrations have already been collected.
Legislative Assembly is better with a diversity of voices, and we welcome all our members. We hope that you will join us!
As a key lesson from this experience, we are making additions to our inclusion checklist for venue review in the future.
We regret that we missed this issue with SPU and will do better next time.
