Sunday Class Descriptions


Registering for specific class sessions is important for estimating class size. Once onsite you may attend any class with space available.

Effective Budgets and Financial Strategies

Topic: Financial

Building a goal-based budget is key to the success of PTAs. Learn how to assess your PTA’s financial management practices and how to develop and amend budgets. Please note: topics discussed in this class are not covered in the class “Managing Your Nonprofit PTA: The Financial Responsibilities of Board Members.”

Council Fundamentals

Structured for both new and experienced council leaders, this session reviews the mission and responsibilities of councils and their relationships with local PTAs, the region and Washington State PTA. We will also discuss how to meet the needs of your local PTAs through a variety of council programs.

PTA and the Law deals with state and federal rules and regulations relevant to running a charitable, tax-exempt, nonprofit corporation in the State of Washington and will explain how these rules impact your PTA. Must be present in both class sessions to get credit. Must register for both class sessions.

SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age

Topic: Health and Safety; Communications and Technology

SCREENAGERS probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including the director’s own, and depicts messy struggles, over social media, video games, academics, and internet addiction. Preventing Theft In your PTA: Understanding Sound Financial Practices

Topic: Financial

This class will help participants recognize at least 10 warning signs of theft, fraud, and embezzlement. Attendees will learn how to prevent theft by understanding how financial reviews and good money-handling procedures benefit PTAs.

The birds and the bees can be tough to talk about but with a little information, and some careful thought and planning, it’s possible to have comfortable and effective converstions that help your kids make good decisions.

Topic: Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying

We will define bullying, discuss those involved and the impact on our youth and future. Learn to intervene and prevent bullying by empowering our youth and adults to create more compassionate and loving educational environments and communities.

*NEW* Child Sex Trafficking Discussion Panel

Topic: Advocacy; Health and Safety

Join this important panel discussion presenting the statewide, ongoing police cases of girls from our neighborhood schools being targeted, enticed, and eventually trafficked and forced into prostitution and drugs. The panel includes law enforcement, human service organizations that serve victims, and service organizations addressing culture change in male gender roles.

Navigate a Meeting: An Interactive Journey

Topic: PTA

This interactive presentation requires attendees to participate as fictional board members. Scripts are handed out and the presenter/president facilitates the class through a “mock” meeting covering a myriad of things that may occur such as motions, committee reports, and passing the gavel.

The Big Picture: Stepping up to Leadership

Good leaders are big picture thinkers. Discover what it means to be a big picture thinker and how leaders who embrace this strategic thinking can drive your PTA’s success.
