Director's Message
Welcome to another year of PTA! As you lead your unit, you will have great opportunities to have an impact on the lives of others, have lots of fun, and encounter interesting challenges. We, the Washington State PTA and Region 12 Service Delivery Team Members (SDT), appreciate you taking this position. We are here to help in any way we can.

The following tips can give you some guidance in getting started. Your state, region, or council PTAs can help as well.
-Thank the outgoing president, talk about your PTA unit, and ask for his/her recommendations. Hold a transition meeting with all the outgoing officers &/or board members.
- Finalize board and committee chair appointments.
- Submit a list of officers and committee chairs, with contact information to the state PTA. If you need assistance with the online process, please contact Connie Andrews, Region 12 Membership Chair or me.
- Meet with executive committee members to discuss planning for the year and establish priorities for your unit. Remember the executive committee does not have the power to make decisions that affect the budget for the unit; they will need the approval from the board of directors or the general membership.
- Create a back to school packet, flyer, or newsletter for the parents and staff of your school. Get the parents involved before school begins; hit the ground running. Find a place for everyone who volunteers.
- Plan to attend training and leadership development seminars available to all unit leaders, and to represent your unit at the council level and at state PTA events. If you cannot attend a scheduled training, invite the SDT to bring the training to your unit.
- Make a point of adding a Legislative or Advocacy Chair to your board. This is a great way to get dads involved in PTA. Karen Albers, Region 12 Legislative Chair is available to help you.

Presidents, I recommend you keep a binder or folder that contains bylaws, standing rules, the latest audit, minutes from last year's board and membership meetings, and last year's plan of work and budget. Two great resources available to you are the Leadership Packet from the Washington State PTA and the PTA Presidents Quick-Reference Guide from the National PTA. The National PTA Presidents Quick-Reference Guide was mailed to all unit presidents in the spring. If you do not have it, ask last year's president to pass on his or her copy. You can also view a copy on www.pta.org under Leadership Resources. The Washington State PTA Leadership Packet will be given to you at the Fall Region Conferences in August; this packet is available on line at the www.wastatepta.org  site under resources.

While the new school year is just around the corner, summer gives PTA leaders an opportunity to plan ways to assist parents in becoming active partners with their children's school during the upcoming school year. During this planning time, think about the following questions.
- What are the demographics in your school and community?
- Who are your stakeholders?
- What are your stakeholders' needs and wants?
- How will you go about fulfilling those needs and wants?
- How does the school community view the PTA (for example, as a representative of the school/administration, teachers, some parents, or all parents)?
- What creative and unique things can be done to get PTA's message to parents, teachers, administrators, and community members?
Please remember you are not alone; we have an amazing Region 12 Service Delivery Team ready, willing, and more than able to assist with any needs/trainings your unit may have. We are here to help you - put us to work for you.
Enjoy the warm summer weather!!
