Program Overview
The purpose of the Applegate grant program is to provide opportunities for supplemental funding to units and councils for community-wide projects focusing on the health, welfare, safety, education, care, and protection of children. Each year, the Washington State PTA sets aside funds to be awarded to local units and councils for these programs, projects, and activities.

We believe that all students need to be proficient in science to be successful in life and that this proficiency is as fundamental a skill in today's - and tomorrow’s - society, as reading. In may 2010 the Redmond elementary PTSA will be supporting a day-long science immersion experience.

Magic math family night

Families at smith elementary are energized about math! We will implement magic math family night. This will enable families to explore concepts such as geometry, number sense, algebraic and logical thinking and probability and statistics.

After school academic & enrichment program

We are continuing with our after school program. This program provides our students with the many academic and enrichment classes.

Community Reading Night

This project will support our community reading night at chase lake. Members of the community, firefighters, police officers, school bus drivers, teachers, and local elected officials are invited to read their favorite picture book to small groups of students. Every child gets to choose a book to take home and keep. This will take place during the read across America week celebrating dr. Seuss' birthday.

Helping Low Income Students

This program is designed to help facilitate and maximize the learning potential, educational opportunity, and overall well being of students at college place elementary that are inhibited due to the economic or social status of the family or other factors, generally, outside of routine services provided by the school.

After School Program (ASP)

Our program enables 123 students to attend 7 free classes on mondays and tuesdays. Goal is to use science and physical education classes to motivate students into learning new content.

Study hawks

Study hawks currently is a two hour once a week after school study club. All students are encouraged to come to study hawks; we will be able to implement a second day a week with the additional funds.

A day of science

Science day is an exciting day devoted entirely to science and the students at penny creek elementary. We have over 20 science presenters that teach our students throughout the day

Family breakfast program

We are hosting a family breakfast in the school cafeteria for each of our grade levels. Families are invited to a sit down breakfast together using real plates, utensils and napkins, and passing dishes family style. We use some of the recipes from our family cooking classes, reinforcing what is learned there.

School garden

We are creating a school garden. There is a portion of the school property that we have been given permission to utilize. We will plant and maintain 15 blueberry bushes, 3 grape vines, strawberries an apple and hazelnut tree, and various herbs.

Early out program

This program provides a safe and supervised alternative for the students who might otherwise spending the time in a less than productive manner.

Elementary fine arts lessons

This program consists of bi-weekly art lessons to 4th - 6ht grade students provided by parent volunteers. The lessons are designed to help reach state curriculum goals for the visual arts. The programs focus is to expose the students to a variety of artists and styles, as well as expand their undertaking of art and enhance their art vocabulary. The lessons are designed so the students are allowed to express themselves using various art mediums. Art is important to the education of students as it opens up the creative side of their brains.

After school garden club

In 2007 dedicated parents, students, teachers, and community members contributed funds, time and labor to construct a raised bed school garden at sharpstein elementary school in walla walla. Students participate by planting and harvesting crops as part of the garden curriculum. These funds will support a school club, once a week the elementary schools release kids one hour early. The garden club provides a safe place for kids to spend this extra time after school.

We have created a community wide program called heart in hand outreach, which serves homeless children and families living in our school communities.

Watch D.O.G.S

Implement the watch d.o.g.s. program at our school. This national program was first implemented in 1998 in an effort to help prevent violence from occurring in school and is intended to help every school in america be positively influenced by the committed involvement of fathers and father figures in the lives of children and students.

Book bingo night

The students and parents of sheridan elementary and the surrounding community are invited to this event. Every child and adult goes home with a minimum of 8 books.
