What
is expected from WASL Students?
PTA Offers Answers
“Many
parents know about the WASL, but they may not know what their children are
expected to learn, or how to help them,” said Linda Hanson, Washington State
PTA President. “Our new brochures will help parents understand the grade level
expectations and how they can support that learning at home.”
Parents from around the state
participated in the creation of the resources, using grade level expectations (GLEs)
prepared by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
“I appreciated the opportunity to help parents understand how they can
be more involved,” said Deb Morgan, an Issaquah parent of teens who
participated in the project.
The project was made possible by support
from Washington Mutual and the Boeing Company.
“Building community partnerships like this one is necessary as all of
us work toward the success of every child,” said Hanson.
The brochures, entitled “What’s
my child learning in school? Reading,
Writing, and Math” for grade 8 and grade 10 can be downloaded from the
Washington State PTA website, www.wastatepta.org
(click on "Resources"), or requested by calling toll-free 1-800-562-3804.
In addition, the May issue of the Child Advocate, Washington State PTA’s quarterly
publication, has more detailed information about grade level expectations.
“We also encourage parents to check
with their local schools and districts to see what additional information is
available,” said Hanson. “Every
child deserves all the help he or she needs to succeed in school and in life.”
